The recent revolution in Egypt has shaken the Arab world to its roots. The most populous Arab country and the historical center of Arab intellectual life, Egypt is a linchpin of the US's Middle East strategy. Now, at this transformative moment in history, Egyptians have an opportunity to create a country for the modern age. What kind of society will Egyptians build? How will they forge relations with Israel, Iran, and Turkey?

Steven Cook will discuss the recent history of Egypt, current challenges, and what must be done to build an economically and politically vibrant society.

Steven A. Cook is senior fellow for Middle Eastern studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Prior to joining CFR, Dr. Cook was a research fellow at the Brookings Institution and at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. His articles have been published in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Financial Times, and the International Herald Tribune. He is also a frequent commentator on radio and television and writes the blog, “From the Potomac to the Euphrates.” His latest book The Struggle for Egypt: From Nasser to Tahrir Square will be available at the program.

Co-sponsored with the Council on Foreign Relations.
