The Eleventh Annual Trinity Jazz Festival (January 27-29, 2012) will feature jazz icon saxophonist Richie Cole (pictured) and swinging vocalist Kevin Mahogany. The acoustically excellent sanctuary of the historic Trinity Church, 1015 Holman at Main in Houston, will reverberate with the rhythm and sounds of these jazz greats as it has done now for eleven years. Each evening will include a reception with various culinary delights and libations included in the ticket price.

Saxman extraordinaire Richie Coles headlines on Friday night with opening act Horace Alexander Young at 8pm, preceded by Prestige Award winning jazz ensemble Westbury High School Band at 7pm.

Saturday night features the smooth tones of vocalist Kevin Mahogany with opening act Jake Langley at 8pm preceded by Prestige Award winning jazz ensemble Sharpstown High School Jazz Band at 7pm.

Both Saturday and Sunday’s performances will be preceded by a very special presentation at 6:30pm by COTS Jazz Crew, an ensemble of talented local musicians, assembled in collaboration with Lord of the Streets Episcopal Church, whose mission is to minister to the needs of Houston’s homeless.

The festival culminates on Sunday morning with two services of the annual Trinity Jazz Festival Jazz Mass at 10:30am and at 12:30pm featuring a full choir, a jazz ensemble and all original musical arrangements by Paul English and Horace Alexander Young.

The festival’s founder, Father William B. Miller, sees jazz—city music par excellence—as a vehicle for emphasizing both the historic Trinity Church’s urban setting and its commitment to artistic expression.

The first festival highlighted outstanding performances by Ellis Marsalis, the patriarch of the famed New Orleans jazz family, and Ed Calle, the popular Miami saxophonist. Subsequent festivals have featured such notable talents as the legendary sax player David “Fathead” Newman, trumpeter Marvin Stamm, Kirk Whalum, Tia Fuller, Bud Shank, Andre Hayward, Jason Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Suzi Stern, Barrie Lee Hall Jr., Kyle Turner, David Liebman, Roseanna Vitro, Jason Moran, and many of our own great players from Houston and the surrounding region.

Tickets for the Friday and Saturday concerts are available online through the festival website: www.trinityjazzfestival.org. The Sunday mass is free and open to the public.
