The Deutser Art Gallery at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston will host A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, 1910-1965 from Wednesday, January 18 – February 24, 2012. This American Library Association travelling exhibit weaves together a history of the Jewish songwriters who contributed heavily to the famous classics of the “American Songbook” with lively and striking images from Broadway musicals, classic films, posters and personal collections.

The public is invited to two free programs at the ERJCC, 5601 S. Braeswood, that expand upon the exhibit. Discovering the Jewish Roots of the American Songbook on Monday, Jan 23 at 8:00 PM sheds light on the Jewish liturgical roots of American music.

Howard Pollack of the Moores School of Music at University of Houston, pianist and singer Henry Darragh, Cantor Lance Rhodes of Congregation Brith Shalom, and cabaret performer Bethany Daniels Shapiro will perform classic favorites that once started out in the Jewish prayer book.
