The Menil Collection and the Department of English, Rice University present An Illustrated Lecture: Terry Castle - Inside or Outside? Collecting Outsider Art.  Thursday, January 12, 2012, 7:00 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibition Seeing Stars: Visionary Drawing from the Menil Collection. The drawings, by artists who have been variously called outsider, visionary, folk, naïve, or self-taught, showcase a unique and rarely exhibited facet of the Menil’s works on paper.

Terry Castle (pictured) joined the faculty of Stanford University in 1983. In addition to publishing on literature, she has a long-standing interest in collecting and writing about Outsider Art. She is the author of ten books and many articles on literary culture, visual art, and sexuality. Her The Professor and Other Essays (2010) was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism, and New York Magazine named it a “Top Ten Book.”

Castle’s many awards and honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pew Foundation Grant, and a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholarship. In November, 2011, she gave Oxford University’s prestigious Clarendon Lectures. This is her first lecture in Houston.
