The 9th Annual Houston Salsa Congress will Be Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, January 12-15, 2012.

In the year 2000, under the direction of Jorge Mercado, Houston Salsa Dancers, Inc. hosted the first Congress of its kind in the City of Houston. The Houston Salsa Congress continues that legacy under the management and organization of Houston Salsa Dancers, Inc. with the assistance of our many volunteers. The Houston Salsa Congress continues to highlight the beauty, creativity, and culture of Latin dance and music.

Houston Salsa Dancers, Inc. (“HSD”) views Houston as more than just a city in which to dance Latin music. The organization is proud to actively establish an environment to promote community involvement and to assist individuals interested in the pursuit of higher education. As an integral part of the Houston Salsa Congress, HSD contributes to the community through the annual scholarship program. Students participating in community-based programs and involved in Latin dance and/or music activities have an opportunity to apply for the Houston Salsa Dancers Educational Scholarship each year.

During the weekend of the Houston Salsa Congress, HSD works with the University of Houston’s Admissions office to present “Bailando Hacia La Universidad” (“Dancing Your Way to College”). “Bailando Hacia La Universidad” is a half day forum providing information to high school and college students about college choices, financial aid and the enrichment of Latin culture. Speakers and performances at the forum include key international performers from the Houston Salsa Congress.

Today, under the direction of new HSD board members and in collaboration with Albert Torres, the Houston Salsa Congress has grown to become one of the largest salsa events in the Southwest. Houston Salsa Dancers, Inc. continues to be an officially recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The members and volunteers of the HSD organization work hard all year round to provide you, our guest, with quality talent and entertainment at every event.
