TwistedPop Arts Guild presents Start the Guild: TwistedPop Arts Guild. We are holding 2 different meeting times Thurs. Feb 2nd and Sat. Feb 4th. Come to one or both of the dates that fits your schedule.

Many people are interested in starting a for profit Houston Artist guild , but don’t know where to start. Guilds provide a good setting to exchange information and to socialize. They can also accomplish things that individual artists can’t, such as sponsoring workshops, tradesman to tradesman round table/collaborations, organizing group activities, or operating group facilities, insurance, legal assistance, studios, and galleries.

The purpose of these meetings is to share the experiences of one group of artists in forming a guild. The group was started informally in mid-2009, and now we want to hold an open meeting/..forum to see if we should even form a guild. Potential Guild members meet to ascertain whether they want to form.

First, we will need a core group. One person can be the catalyst, but it takes a lot of work to get something like this started – we’ll need a group of people who are excited about the idea, and willing to put in some work to make it happen, but we know of groups with as few as 9 members are still able to accomplish a lot by working together. We hope that our experiences can help other artists get together!

This formula has been successful for Guild formation:

    • First, you will need a core group
    • creating a mission statement
    • Democracy
    • Meeting #1: The Initial Evaluation
    • Guild members meet to ascertain whether they want to form.
    • Advantages to having a local Guild include:
    • Control of your own finances – not spread over country in At-Large
    • Direct input to community-Democracy
    • Local issues – such as taxes –
    • More people join the Guild when they see local activity
    • Committees could include:
    • Communications: Newsletter and website and National news
    • Events: To coordinate local exhibits, speakers, fund-raisers, patrons
    • Membership: To focus on new members
    • Requirements for a Guild:
    • 30 founding members, 60 is better for stability and division of tasks
    • Six board members: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and two Representatives
    • All members get a vote.
    • Gain Sharing Profit Model
