It’s the late 19th century, and Dr. Givings has invented a shocking new electrical device to treat women with “hysteria”. As his patients begin to blossom with the new treatment, the lonely Mrs. Givings can't help but wonder...what is happening in the next room?

Acclaimed playwright Sarah Ruhl creates an outrageous and tender portrait of love and marriage in an age of spectacular technology—an age not at all unlike our own.

Directed by Leslie Swackhamer (The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Amy's View, Rabbit Hole, Lady, Man from Nebraska and The Andrews Brothers).

    Starring:

A Stubborn Woman, by Diana Weeks
It's 1905 in a small Texas-town, Ella is eighteen and getting married, and what she doesn't know about sex could fill a book. Her aunt and worldly cousin have lots of advise, but Ella must navigate the new waters of intimacy and love with her husband, learning what it means to build a family and a home.

Eva Laporte directs this one-night only staged reading of a new play that shares many of the themes found in Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room or the vibrator play. A discussion with the cast and playwright will immediately follow the reading.
