Houston Maritime Museum presents a Houston Maritime Museum Lecture: Titanic to Costa Concordia: The legal consequences of maritime disasters, Thursday, April 12 at 7pm.

Maritime law, simply put, regulates the business of carrying cargo and passengers by sea and, with beginnings in the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, it is one of the world’s oldest legal codes. It has since evolved into a complicated set of domestic and international rules and multilateral treaties designed to maintain safety on the high seas.

Jeffrey Weiss, Associate Professor of Law and Transportation at SUNY Maritime, will examine the ways that highly publicized disasters have reshaped maritime law over the past century, starting with the sinking of the beloved Titanic and culminating with the unfortunate Costa Concordia accident.

Join us at the museum as we honor the Titanic's 100th anniversary by exploring the advances we've made in maritime safety since its ill-fated demise.

Admission is free and includes access to the museum's collections.
