Thursday, 13th September, 2012, Literacy Advance of Houston hosts SCRABBLE and the City 2012, Literacy Advance of Houston’s annual fundraiser, on Thursday, September 13, from 7-10 p.m. at Saint Arnold Brewing Company, 2000 Lyons Avenue, Houston, 77020!

SCRABBLE and the City is Houston's most innovative and fun charitable event! Guests drink, dine, dance and score in an exciting and one-of-a-kind SCRABBLE competition, prizes included.

A conga line for additional points. A soul train for extra Scrabble tiles. Even a celebrity karaoke moment when former Houston Astros pitcher Larry Dierker sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to secure game changing points for his team. It’s all part of the fun at Scrabble and the City.

The event features two rounds of zany Scrabble games, complete with a top-secret game changer that will be revealed that evening. Americana is this year’s theme and prizes are awarded for the best Scrabble team name and the best team costumes. The top prize: Mr. T – the coveted Scrabble and the City Trophy and a year’s worth of bragging rights.

SCRABBLE and the City 2012 is not your grandmother's SCRABBLE! Will your SCRABBLE team be the next to get your name on Mr. T the traveling trophy?

Want to play? Visit the Literacy Advance website or call 713-266-8777.

Talk about a high score? Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar – River Oaks has stepped in to provide their five star quality, hearty dinner bites, replacing the now closed Strip House originally slated as event caterer. Fleming’s community-minded white knights, Operating Partner Sam Governale and Chef Partner James Cole, are sure to serve up some delectable brain food for Scrabble guests.

Nothing Bundt Cakes Houston – Galleria/Uptown will provide their Americana-themed bundt cake mini desserts for those who need a little sugar. Whole Foods – Wilcrest has generously donated popcorn and other game-night friendly snacks.

Spectators and guests will also enjoy a lively evening thanks to the emcee talents of Sean Pendergast, sports talk radio host at Yahoo! Sports Radio 1560, dancing to tunes spun by DJ Sounds, and for the shoppers there will be a fantastic slate of raffle packages.

Raffle offerings will include a spa package, a road trip getaway, golf at a top tier course, major Houston sports team tickets, jewelry and more.

The most linguistically creative night of the year benefits Literacy Advance, the city’s oldest and largest volunteer-based literacy provider. In 2011, Literacy Advance and its volunteers provided free adult and family literacy services to more than 3,000 individuals.

The fundraiser is held in conjunction with the National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week.

“We have been providing free adult literacy programs for more than 48 years,” said Melanie Fisk, Executive Director of Literacy Advance. “Our free programs open the door of opportunity for Houstonians struggling with literacy so they can find jobs, read to their children, take pride in their accomplishments and work their way out of poverty.” The non-profit organization depends upon sponsorships and donations to provide free literacy education throughout Houston.

Food, beer, Scrabble® contests (including best team name and best team costume), and prizes all in the name of Literacy!
