Miller Outdoor Theatre and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings present La Sardina de Naiguata.

These Smithsonian Folkways recording artists fuse traditional Venezuelan Carnival music with more diverse and progressive instrumentation in a way that has revolutionized and reinvigorated the parranda genre.

La Sardina de Naiguata is one of the most representative groups of Afro-Venezuelan drum music from the central coast of Venezuela. Their work is an emblematic representation of the musical traditions of the Venezuelan Carnaval, Christmas, Easter and the popular tradition of "The Burial of the Sardine.”

Their upcoming CD "Parranda!" will be released on June 19 by Smithsonian Folkways Records.

Sponsored by the Consulate General of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Houston and Chevron Corporation, as part of the Venezuelan Sounds Music Series.
