Houston Friends of Chamber Music presents Tallis Scholars.

They are the “rock stars of Renaissance Music”, according to the New York Times. The famed Tallis Scholars return to the Houston Friends of Chamber Music concert series after ten years. The concert will take place on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall, Shepherd School of Music, at Rice University.

Peter Phillips, founder and director of the Tallis Scholars since 1973, has worked with the ensemble to create the purity and clarity of sound that he feels best serve the Renaissance repertoire, allowing every detail of the musical lines to be heard. It is the resulting beauty of sound for which the Tallis Scholars have become so widely renowned.

“…an uncanny ability to increase emotional intensity so subtly that you don’t realise it’s happening. Then, suddenly, pow! The music’s blazing; so are you…” The Times

Tallis Scholars will present their Love is Better than Wine program, framed by two brilliant double choir settings of the Magnificat - one Spanish: Vivanco’s Magnificat Octavi Toni (a 8), the other German: H. Praetorius’s Magnificat including Carols Joseph Lieber and In Dulci Jubilo. This program features the unforgettable setting of Osculetur Me, taken from the Song of Songs, by Lassus. This program also includes two motets by contemporary composer Arvo Pärt: I Am the True Vine and Tribute to Caesar, followed by Tallis' Sancte Deus.

The performance will be held at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall, Shepherd School of Music, using campus entrances #18 from Rice Blvd or #8 from University Blvd. Parking is directly across from the Hall, in West Lot 1, at a cost of $4 for the event (major credit card required). Single tickets are available from $20 - $70, with discounts for students and seniors. For more information on this event and the rest of the 2012-2013 season, please visit www.HoustonFriendsofChamberMusic.org  or call 713.348.5400.

Houston Friends of Chamber Music is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance. These performances are also made possible by generous grants from Houston Endowment Inc., a philanthropy endowed by Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones.
