August Selection: Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott.

In August, the book club explores fiction that was popular in the United States during the late 1800s. Eight Cousins, by Louisa May Alcott, tells the story of recently orphaned Rose Campbell, who goes to Massachusetts to live with her extended family, which includes six aunts, seven male cousins and an uncle with avant-garde views about the proper upbringing of females.

Released in the years following Alcott’s famous Little Women, the novel Eight Cousins offers a vivid snapshot of the life and environs of New England during the mid-19th century.
