NobleMotion Dance, described by Dance Magazine as one of Houston’s “A-list” dance companies, has joined forces with light/technology artist  David J. Deveau, to present Spitting Ether: A Reality Bending Dance. August 31-September 1 and September 6-8, at Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex.  All performances at 8pm.

NobleMotion, known for its raw athleticism, physicality, and integration of theater and technology into dance performance, will showcase a two year collaboration with Deveau that was described by Austin’s The Statesman as “ethereal and ghostly.” Images of hospital rooms, gas chambers, Lorelei and dissolving spirits abound, allowing the dance to enter into spiritual, mythical and even science fiction realms.

A nightmare with spiritual undertones, Spitting Ether is a haunting work that enters a subconscious mind in transitional phases of life, death, and afterlife. The evening is comprised of 5 sections, each falling deeper into the subliminal mind. Lorelei’s whisperuses the simplicity of a single projector as a light source in a sea of fog. The effect creates walls of light that the dancers emerge from like beautiful wraiths. Critic Claire Christine Spera described it as “awe-inspiring.”

In Landing Light, a video camera captures a dancer’s movement in real time and projects the footage back onto the dancer, creating a lingering replica of the soul. A portal to another dimension, The Ether Chamber is a 10-foot glass enclosure that obscures the dancers in a thunderstorm of light and fog, evoking the imagination and penetrating the psyche.

Choreographer Andy Noble states, “The chamber is visually stunning and our audiences will be enthralled by the special effects.”
