H-E-B presents Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra presents A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald

For one night only - Relive the music of a legend at Miller Outdoor Theatre.  The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra visits Miller Outdoor Theatre on Saturday, October 26 at 7:30pm to perform the timeless music of Ella Fitzgerald (pictured).

Dubbed “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the US for more than half a century. This special tribute program will present many of Ella's original big band arrangements performed by the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and featuring international vocalist Delores King Williams.

The repertoire centers on a special moment in American history by pulling original arrangements done for Ella in the 1940-1950s from the Smithsonian and Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation archives, arrangements not heard by live audiences in over 40 years.

The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra was founded in 1990 in recognition of the importance of jazz in American culture and its status as a national treasure. The orchestra, led by Artistic and Musical Director Charlie Young, serves as the orchestra-in-residence at the National Museum of American History, Division of Cultural History.

The orchestra recreates big-band jazz as its composers and arrangers intended it to be played, stripping away intervening changes and alterations. The SJMO has rediscovered old classics and more recently has begun premiering new works all in tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald. Composed of musicians drawn from across the United States, the orchestra plays authentic and compelling performances of the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie and many other masters. Delores King Williams performs as vocalist.

Presented by Miller Outdoor Theatre and H-E-B.
