The G Gallery in the Heights presents Kenneth E Parris III: 104 Work Weeks: On Tour With the Merce Cunningham Dance Company On view May 5-27, 2012 Opening reception Saturday, May 5, 6pm-9pm Performance 7pm (Merce Cunningham Legacy Tour members Marcie Munnerlyn and Melissa Toogood will perform a selection of duets and solos from Cunningham's oeuvre with an original score by Jeff Klein of indie rock band My Jerusalem)

During 2010 and 2011, Brooklyn artist Kenneth E Parris III accompanied the Merce Cunningham Dance Company on the road in order to document their final tour This “Legacy Tour” showcased eighteen works in fifty cities around the world and featured the last group of dancers personally trained by Cunningham himself
After fifty-eight years of artistic achievement, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company disbanded on New Year’s Day of 2012 Through years of collaboration with artists like Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, David Tudor, and many more, their work forever changed how we see and define art in the twentieth and twenty-first century
While traveling with the company, Parris took hundreds of snapshots of the dancers for reference material His focus was not what happens on stage during performances but rather the dancer’s way of life The drawings in the exhibition show us the quiet and private moments, loud parties, the rigors of traveling, celebratory dinners, exhaustion, and many rituals All these scenes express the essence and complexity of the dancers’ personalities and underlines their drive to contribute and be a part of something that is bigger than themselves

Three weeks of blatantly unconventional dance and performance! It's been 10 years of the Big Range Dance Festival and this year we have a very exciting roster of new dance works by more than 20 different choreographers from Houston, Austin, Atlanta, Washington DC, New York and Memphis
For the first time in its history, the festival offers a week-long workshop and performance lab which culminates in a performance on the third weekend of the festival Also for the first time, the festival branches out of downtown Houston with a site specific performance in West Houston at a space that was once a JC Penny's
This year celebrating our 10th anniversary! The Big Range Dance Festival offers choreographers an environment for exploring new directions in dance A project by Suchu Dance, the next Big Range Dance Festival (BRDF) performances are scheduled June 1, 2, 3, 8, 9,15 and 16 at the Barnevelder Theater and the West oaks Art House
An artist driven and artist produced festival, BRDF presents new, untried works that investigate diverse ideas and new movement concepts BRDF seeks artists who continuously re-evaluate the possibilities for modern/post-modern dance in a contemporary context: how it is created, how it is presented and how it is experienced
The festival offers an invitation for risk, prospecting new directions and questioning conventions It is also an opportunity for adventurous audiences to take a fast ride down unknown and unpredictable roads Past BRDF participants have ranged from some of the most known and beloved artists and companies in Houston, to some of the newest, youngest dance makers emerging on the Houston dance scene, as well as artists from around the nation
THE FESTIVAL:
Special Site Specific Performance Opening Night Trolley ride from East Downtown to West Oaks Mall for 10TH Suchu

Dance's Big Range Dance Festival Opening
Opening Night: June 1, 8:00 pm with special Event Trolley

And Two Matinee performances at 1:00 on June 9 and 16

West Oaks Art House

Jennifer Wood/Suchu Dance with guest performers premiere Afternono, a site-specific performance for 16 dancers at The West Oaks Art House - a former JC Penny's at the West Oaks Mall Sixteen dancers doing postmodern dance in an empty retail emporium The work explores the use of vast space and intentionally strips down conventional theatrical elements such as special lighting, sophisticated sound or a separation of performer and audience
Special Afternono Trolly Opening Night Only, June 1: Don't want to drive to the mall? Park your car (parking location coming soon) and get on board the trolly that will take you there and bring you back Drinks and food on board Special pricing, seating limited to first 24, with limited standing room Pricing coming soon

Program A

Saturday, June 2 at 8:00 and Sunday, June 3 at 7:00

Barnevelder Theater
Anneke Hansen (NYC) - Anneke Hansen’s youandyouandyou explores a movement vocabulary of effort and delicacy Heavily rooted in the somatic experience of the dancers, Hansen’s choreography seeks to create a sympathetic kinesthetic response in the audience As individuals working as part of a collective “we,” the dancers seek the emotional resonance of their moving bodies, stretching their minds with movement and pushing the edges of the space youandyouandyou features dancers Aoife McAtamney, Ariel Pierce, and Anneke Hansen with an original score by composer Nathan Koci, and costumes by Deborah Black
Erin Reck (Houston) plans to include the audience onstage in her piece for herself and Bonnie Collins, Joe Modlin, Leslie Scates, and Brit Wallis This is a new work that challenges the artists involved in its creation and also challenges and exposes the BRDF audience to view dance in a different way
Kristen Frankiewicz (Houston) will perform her duet with Alex Soares titled Glass Scratch which has its basis in the physical study of subtle movements and how they extend beyond just physical execution; and into feeling The shaping of the work is being done through mostly feel of tone or thought, not by external voice, visual, or opinion
NobleMotion Dance in collaboration with David J Deveau incorporates real time projection design with live performance with the goal of blurring the line between the real dancer and the projected dancer The proposed work will utilize two cameras and two projectors that will be manipulated by the dancers

Rebekah Chappell (Houston) performs a solo created through video taped improvisation sessions, which allows her to see and use her natural movement patterns rather than a fixed dance vocabulary The work is also investigating the use of classical music which carries with it preconceived notions of how it is traditionally used in dance
Rosalyn Nasky (Austin) is inspired by the idea that human bodies are made from the same minerals and elements that comprise rocks and canyons She presents a solo to an original composition by Austin-based composer Steven Snowden with animator Randy Polk animating the image of a canyon to appear subtly "alive" It will breathe, tremble, shift, etc throughout the piece
Toni Valle and Catalina Molnari with Lynn Lane (Houston) premiere a duet with music composed by George Heathco and visual media component by Lynn Lane The work explores new ways to interact with live performance and film, where film is not just a backdrop for the live performance, but an integrated component to the piece

Master Class with visiting artist Anneke Hansen

Saturday June 2, 10:00-11:30 am:

$15, at Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex

This class investigates ideas of technique, anatomical function, and creative decision making, and aims to create the conditions for each of us to dance more fully, with a greater awareness of our structure and its unique possibilities, and to give students the tools to make informed, thoughtful decisions both technically and performatively – all things that I seek to continue developing in myself and the dancers who work with me We will begin with a thorough warm-up, mobilizing and stabilizing the joints, focusing on coordination and integration of limbs and trunk with an emphasis on moving through space Class will include practices designed to challenge both brain and body We will use these practices to focus on:

Power, cultivating precise strength/flexibility/agility of bodymind as a means of developing physical power, performative nuance, and honing problem solving skills We will seek to create a broad understanding of the concept of power
Getting Intimate with Dance Material, digging deeply into a piece of movement material in order to transform both the material and your relationship to it

Program B

June 8 and 9 ( Fri and Sat)

Aileen Mapes (Austin) creates tongue in cheek piece "of the 'I' 'me' wanting and have not" The score includes clips from movies such as Dune and The Network The movement explores true weight giving and sharing with wild lines created in space with multiple people
Alex Soares (Houston) presents an excerpt of Give Up the Power, a dance work that explores the question of connection -- how are we connected to each other, and must we be connected to each other? This piece also mixes dance with spoken word, video projection and part of this piece is lit be cell phones and alternate light sources, creating a different, dynamic atmosphere
Ashley Horn (Houston) captures the eerie magic of an actual abandoned Six Flags theme park in New Orleans in her dance for camera work, Jazzland This film portrays the story of a memory trapped in time With no one to remember her, the memory endlessly wanders the grounds of a decaying past
Cori Miller (Houston) presents a new work exploring how we create power through vulnerability By presenting herself in the most authentic way through performance, she creates a moment where others can connect to her sensibility and position in the world Through vignettes and exploring an intricate movement vocabulary, she conveys what has gotten her to where she is now
Corian Ellisor (Atlanta, GA) brings his work Be(a)stie to Houston Be(a)stie is what happens when two people share a brain and decide to make a dance Alex Abarca and Corian Ellisor are friends; best friends They met in college and 8 years later they have still not killed each other Be(a)stie explores the complexity and camaraderie of their completely platonic relationship though theater, song and dance
Ondine Geary (Memphis, TN) performs two solos by two different choreographers: Choreographer Peter Carpenter's Rituals of Abundance for Lean Times # 4: Considering the Pelvis utilizes tightly interwoven text and movement, Pelvis engages questions about the dance making process, namely, the division of labor between the choreographer and dancer, and the resulting ownership over the work It also challenges the way in which we automatically sexualize the pelvis when we see it in motion Choreographer Karl Rogers’ piece, After Hours, is a character-driven piece that creates a window into the interior life, the private space, of a woman She lives alone She seeks companionship She has grown accustomed to being disappointed by the people she chooses The dance ranges from contemplative, spacious and still to driving and highly physical, revealing both the character’s strength and vulnerability

Master Class with visiting artist Ondine Geary

With impassioned dance and bold theatrics, it's an ideal showcase for the company's newest stars The ballet that inaugurated Wortham Theater Center in 1987 is back in this, our inaugural season rehearsing in the new Center for Dance
"Romeo and Juliet soars with emotion, fine dancing"
