Jam-packed with big, flashy numbers like "Luck Be a Lady" and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat," it's no surprise "Time" magazine pronounced "Guys and Dolls" "the greatest of all American musicals." This Tony-winning tale is set in New York City during the swinging 1940s, where Nathan Detroit turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the cash to float the biggest craps game in town. When dolls -- especially a straitlaced missionary named Sarah Brown -- get involved, the term "high stakes" applies to both love and money. This dynamic and modern production of the beloved classic comes to Houston's Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. [less-]

Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. hile candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter but only one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. See this award-winning play at Stageworks Theatre in Houston. [less-]

Pop icon Cyndi Lauper made history as the first solo woman ever to receive the Tony for Best Score thanks to her contributions to Broadway's high-heeled hit, "Kinky Boots". Written in 1882, "An Enemy of the People" takes aim at a number of issues that were prevalent in Norway at the time: political corruption and the silencing of whistleblowers, the destructive impact of industry on the environment, and the role ethics plays in the media and what they report. Clearly these subjects are not only still relevant today, but remarkably topical once again. The play follows Dr. Thomas Stockmann, a notable and respected doctor in his town, as he discovers that the local water supply and the public baths -- a source of great pride and income for the town -- have become contaminated by local industry and are now poisonous. He struggles with his brother, the town's mayor and one of the owners of the baths, in trying to get his findings published in the town's newspaper. A play, at its heart, about personal responsibility and the rights and roles of whistleblowers, "An Enemy of the People" could be ripped from today's headlines. See it at the Classical Theatre @Chelsea Market in Houston. [less-]

Clowns have gotten a bad rap in the last few years, but they aren't all bad! Some are just lovable humans looking for hope -- like the main character of "Cirque du Soleil: CORTEO". In the company of flying angels, a beloved entertainer imagines his own funeral procession in the form of a festive and lavish parade. They say write what you know, so as he passes from this life, the comedian imagines what he already knows and adds a little heaven to it. His dreaming creates a spellbinding world brought to life under the bigtop by dazzling costumes and sets. The drama of the real lives of traveling performers merges with the surreal to create "Cirque du Soleil's" trademark visuals and a mysterious journey you can't forget. This amazing show is packed with "Cirque"'s seemingly impossible acrobatics, "for a display of human physicality that defies the laws of physics" ("LA Weekly"), as well as lyrical and playful music that will fill the Grand Chapiteau, bringing you into the mystical borderlands where illusion teases reality at the Toyota Center in Houston.
