The Lone Star Performing Arts dba The Galveston Island Musicals was formed in 1973 as a (501-c3) non-profit corporation chartered by the State of Texas. The early mission of the Association was to produce outdoor dramas that presented the history of Texas and its early pioneers in the amphitheatre at Galveston Island State Park.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission voted to allow construction of the amphitheater complex on twenty acres of land at Galveston Island State Park. Volunteers raised over $1,200,000 for the construction. The theatre opened on June 29, 1977, with the production of Paul Green’s Lone Star. The theatre paid the State of Texas 15% of their gross revenues for lease of the property.

To bolster attendance and to increase revenue, a Broadway style musical was added to the season two years later. Annie Get Your Gun was added and ran in repertory with Lone Star through 1983. Later, Annie Get Your Gun was replaced by Hello Dolly and in turn Oklahoma! became the Broadway show to run with Lone Star.

In 1990, the organizational direction was changed in a way that ended the run of Lone Star and Oklahoma! and replaced them with two Broadway style shows that changed every other year. This number has been increased to nine separate productions for the 2006 season with two holiday shows running in November through December.

Beginning with the 2004 season, the Galveston Island Musicals moved indoors to a modern 800 seat theatre located in the Moody Gardens Convention Center. This eliminated many problems such as unpredictable weather, insects and unbearable heat. It also placed the theatre in the middle of the Galveston tourist activity. The audience for these summer productions average over 26,000 with the audience coming primarily from the Greater Houston area.

In 2007, Galveston Island Musicals moved to the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis.

The Texas Family Musicals Inc dba Galveston Summer Musicals was formed in 2007 as a (501-C3) non-profit corporation chartered by the State of Texas.

During the first year, the Texas Family Musicals Inc. operated the Granbury Opera House Musicals in Granbury, Texas. In 2008, it assumed the responsibility for the Galveston Summer Musicals located at the Moody Garens Convention Center. The 2008 Summer Season is sponsored by the Island Star Performances, another non-profit corporation funded by the Moody Foundation which is dedicated to bringing quality entertainment to Galveston Island.

The mission of the Texas Family Musicals Inc. is to produce quality Broadway-style musicals for tourists of Galveston Island and area residents while helping launch careers of young professionals in Musical Theater.

Everyone involved with the productions of the Texas Family Musicals Inc. is activly involved in pursuing a career in Musical Theater. A formal young professional development program run by Broadway-experienced professionals is admiinstered each summer for the cast and crew.

The Texas Family Musicals Inc. will continue producing shows at the Granbury Opera House in Granbury, Texas year-round until December 31, 2008 following the same mission statement as adopted in the formation of the Corporation.
