    Travesty Dance Group/Houston changes name to Karen Stokes Dance.

    Since 1998, Travesty Dance Group co-founder Karen Stokes has set five original evening works, built an innovative educational program, and created over 30 repertory works on her Houston-based company. These works have been performed in numerous venues to strong critical acclaim regionally and nationally. The company has developed a core audience following in Houston, often selling out performances.

    Karen Stokes Dance will continue to produce original dance theatre that combines poetry, voice, visuals, and movement, as well as reaching out to new audiences through touring. The name change reflects the direction of the Houston-based company, with Karen Stokes as the artistic director and choreographer.

    Karen Stokes Dance will retain their 10-year non-profit dance status. The company currently consists of nine performers who work under contract on an annual basis.

    On October 20-22 2011, Karen Stokes Dance launches its new name in a collaboration with nationally recognized composer Bill Ryan at Zilkha Hall in Houston.
