The Houston Brass Band is a traditional British-style brass band. We are currently the only traditional Brass Band in southeast Texas. Membership in the Houston Brass Band is not limited but generally runs about 30 musicians. Membership is by invitation only. Current members include talented amateurs and professionals who come from all over the Greater Houston area.
The Houston Brass Band was formed in the summer of 2000. Rehearsals were held at Houston Baptist University under Tom Jenkins. However, at the end of the summer, the fledgling band lost its rehearsal space, and Tom stepped down as conductor.
Fortunately, the band found a dedicated conductor in the person of Damon Hilsmeier, and a new rehearsal location in the lovely 20′s era auditorium at Lanier Middle school. In the following years, the band prospered, gave concerts, and picked up some regular performances (such as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony on the Battleship Texas), which continue to today.
After a couple of years at Lanier, the band moved to a more permanent home at the Bellaire United Methodist Church. Evolution continued as the band incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
Damon resigned as conductor in 2006 and was replaced by the current music director, Robert Walp. We also moved to our current location in the acoustically exciting Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Under Robert’s able leadership the band is moving to a new level of performance excellence and is poised for an exciting future.
