Hailed by The New York Times as "one of the nation's best ballet companies," Houston Ballet is America's fifth largest ballet company, featuring 53 dancers who have won gold and silver medals at international ballet competitions. Founded in 1969, Houston Ballet is currently under the leadership of the dynamic Australian choreographer Stanton Welch who was named artistic director of the company in 2003.

The company performs a vast repertoire of works, ranging from the great nineteenth century classics such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker to exciting new ballets commissioned from some of the world's most prestigious contemporary choreographers, including Christopher Bruce, Glen Tetley, Julia Adam, Natalie Weir, Lila York and Matjash Mrozewski.

Houston Ballet serves as a cultural ambassador for the city of Houston on its many international tours. Over the last decade, Houston Ballet has performed in London, Moscow, Beijing, Hong Kong, Toronto, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

The company's affiliated school, Houston Ballet's Ben Stevenson Academy, has emerged as one of America's foremost dance training institutions, producing dancers who have gone on to appear with such prestigious companies as Houston Ballet , The Australian Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Under the leadership of Stanton Welch, Houston Ballet has entered a new chapter in its rich three-decade history, thrilling audiences in Houston and across the country with Mr. Welch's edgy, forward-looking aesthetic and a company of vibrantly theatrical artists who are equally at home in classical and contemporary works.
