Shunya Theatre
Shunya Theatre, a Houston-based non-profit theatre troupe, is dedicated to providing a voice to the South Asian American experience through the visual and performing arts. Shunya literally means "zero, nothing, or emptiness" in Sanskrit. The name comes from the Buddhist concept of "nothing" as the ultimate goal of realization. The theatre is Shunya or "empty" until we come together as artists and patrons to bring it to life with our collective imagination. When you start with nothing, anything is possible.
With the verve and enthusiasm to promote South Asian talent in Houston, Shunya has put forth a diverse array of culturally relevant English-language productions, including dramas like "Hayavadana", "Final Solutions", "Bricks and Lyrics" (world premiere) and "Nagamandala," and comedies like "Italian American Reconciliation." Shunya has performed in venues throughout Houston, including Stages Repertory Theatre, the Ensemble Theatre, and DiverseWorks.
