Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC)
The mission of the Houston Museum of African American Culture is to explore stories of truth inspired by themes of opportunity and empowerment, creativity and innovation, and cultural interrelationships through the lens of the African American experience. The Museum seeks to invite and engage visitors of every race and background; to inspire children of all ages through discovery-driven learning, and to preserve African American history.
This statement embodies the specific goals, values, and focus of the Museum. HMAAC believes that discussing the above-mentioned universal themes will create appeal to a broad spectrum of people, as well as attracting a grassroots community that has been under-served by traditional museums. In addition to guiding exhibit and program content, the mission statement serves to underline the guiding principles of the museum: welcoming a broad community of people, preserving African American history, and focusing on children in particular as it educates the local community.
