INSPIRE...UPLIFT...BRING ABOUT POSITIVE CHANGE! These are the driving forces that motivate this Spoken Word Artist. A native Houstonian and ambassador for social justice, Me-Tari has been intriguing audiences with her style of spoken word for the last 17 years. Keeping God as the focal point Me-Tari plans to continue this journey by to giving back to the community and highlighting artists for years to come through MJS Productions.
About Me-Tari:
Me-Tari is a native Houstonian that grew up on the Southside of Houston. Me-Tari got her poetic start while a student at Jack Yates High School located in Houston’s Third Ward community. She developed a love for spoken word as she studied poetic pioneers such as Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes. Me-Tari started writing and performing spoken word for her high school, local churches, and on programs within the community over the next few years. It was Me-Tari’s dream to move to Los Angeles after she graduated from high school to explore her acting options.
Although Me-Tari had a passion for spoken word and acting she was faced with the dilemma of choosing this passion for an advanced education. After high school, Me-Tari placed many of her poetic ambitions on hold as she pursued a higher education. Although she was raised in a supportive home and sheltered from many of the challenges her peers faced, Me-Tari could not help but notice her community was affected by poverty, social inequality, drugs and high school drop outs. This exposure shaped many of Me-Tari’s ideas and she decided to major in Social Work in college. She obtained a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. Me-Tari later received a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Houston and became a licensed social worker for the State of Texas. Me-Tari now works in the medical field with patients that have many of the same socio-economic issues that she saw while growing up.
While pursuing both degrees, Me-Tari always found a way to incorporate her love for spoken word in her course work. She also made to time to visit open mic venues within Houston, Denton, Austin, and Washington, DC. Me-Tari has also been in the play productions, “Hope’s Choice” and “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf” as the “Lady in Red”.
In February of 2009, one of Me-Tari’s dreams became a reality with the launch of MJS Productions. MJS Productions is a platform for artists to showcase their talents and an opportunity for the community to be enriched by spoken word and play productions. Me-Tari is thankful to God for His continual protection, guidance, and blessings. Me-Tari also credits her (great) aunt, Velma and her late (great) grandmother Hazel “Mama” for laying the foundation and for their unyielding support.
