University of Houston - School of Theatre & Dance

The UH School of Theatre & Dance offers bachelor's and master's degrees in theatre and teacher certifications in dance. Its graduate program consists of a master of arts in theatre and masters of fine arts in theatre with specializations in acting, directing and design.

Each fall and spring, the school produces four plays performed in the Wortham Theatre and the Jose Quintero Theatre, two dance concerts, four graduate directing projects, two Theatre for Young Audiences plays and the Houston Shakespeare Festival each summer.

The school has benefitted from notable star faculty such as Edward Albee, Lanford Wilson, Sir Peter Hall and Jose Quintero. Among current faculty are Tony Award-winning playwright Mark Medoff, Tony Award-winning producer Stuart Ostrow, and Broadway dramaturg Mark Bly.

      I realize changing era is de riguer for the plays these days, but setting Much Ado About Nothing in Civil War New Orleans, accents and all is just, well pretty much an insult to any true fan of The Bard - then there's the 2nd act - my companion and I walked out shortly after Dogberry came out sounding like a refugee from the Dukes of Hazzard accompanied by someone dressed like they just stepped off the set of Hee Haw - call me crazy but I am fairly certain Junior Samples doesn't belong in Much Ado About Nothing...in the interest of truth in advertising, for the remaining performances they might consider re-titling it either Much Ado 'Bout Nuffum or maybe Much Ado in Dogpatch - what exactly was the director smoking when he came up with this one...you may call me an uppity yankee if you wish, but some things are sacred - Shakespeare has been dead several hundred years, he can't defend himself, so please leave the poor guy alone...
