    Women from the Houston area have been skating together since January 2005 with the goal of forming a roller derby league. Originally formed under another name, the birth of a new league run  - by the skaters, for the skaters - occurred in March 2005.     Women from the Houston area have been skating together since January 2005 with the goal of forming a roller derby league. Originally formed under another name, the birth of a new league run  - by the skaters, for the skaters - occurred in March 2005. Since the formation of Houston Roller Derby, we have had a steady stream of participation from women all over the Houston Metro Area.

    Since the beginning of 2005, Houston Roller Derby has participated in several Houston community events, including Houston AIDS Walk and the annual Art Car Parade. Our goal is to focus not only on the competitiveness and the entertainment of playing a sport, but to also involve ourselves with our community through outreach and participation in local charities and events.

    Houston Roller Derby consists of four teams, the Burlesque Brawlers, the Bayou City Bosses, the Machete Betties, and the Psych Ward Sirens. Each team consists of 10-15 women, each with a different skill set to fit in with their team's style and strategy.

    Participation in HRD requires women to train athletically three or more times a week. Training includes mastery of basic and advanced skating skills and building endurance. Roller Derby is a tough sport that requires strong muscular-skeletal composition in order to endure the aggressiveness and extremity of the sport.
