About the artist: BIOGRAPHY
Anila Quayyum Agha was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan, where she earned her BFA in Textile Arts in 1989. Relocating to Dallas, TX in 1999 she attended the University of North Texas and completed her MFA in Fiber Arts in 2004. Anila has an extensive exhibition record and has won numerous awards for her artwork, such as the Fort Worth Dealers Association Award.
Anila explores social and gender related issues in her mixed media works on paper referencing the handmade, and commenting on social concepts constructed by our societies.
Through her drawings she invokes the history and residual memory of the feminine and the domestic. She uses embroidery as a drawing medium connecting the multiple layers resulting from the interaction of concept and process and bridges the gap between modern materials and the historical and traditional patterns of oppression and domestic servitude.
Anila was an Artist in Resident at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and lives and works in Houston, TX.
