Visual Artist: Crafts - Visual Artist: Photography

    About the artist: ARTIST STATEMENT
As a musician and composer, I've always been obsessed with creating original and fresh sounds. Simply replicating other musicians' styles didn't satisfy me. Whether I performed with the piano, guitar, saxophone or trombone, the end result was an aural experience I wanted to achieve with the instrument of choice. As time passed and my artistic passion shifted towards the visual arts, I discovered that photography was the new medium I embraced to express myself visually. Various cameras became my instruments of choice to produce my artistic vision and self-expression. My world became absorbed with this new creative outlet until one day I knew I had fallen in love.

Since the great outdoors has always been an integral part of my soul, it became the underlying focus for my photographic and artistic vision. I always felt I was in my element when I was away from the concrete urban jungle and intermingling with flora and fauna. Whether capturing visions of the wild mustangs in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park or a close-up of a an insect interacting with bluebonnets in the Texas Hill Country, what means most to me isn't necessarily capturing the image as much as being a part of the environment-even if for only the moment.

As the years passed, I realized how our environment was being exploited, neglected and in a state of decline. I have the innate need to capture these precious moments of time and space before it is too late. It's my deepest desire to share my vision of the world for our future posterity because I want others to share the experience as I first encountered and remembered it.

I might present my vision with such depictions as a dew drop about to fall from a leaf or slow the camera's shutter speed to capture longer moments in time such as trees blurred by swaying in the wind. Whatever technique I consciously chose to utilize, I felt the end result was achieved if a connection was made with that moment in time.

    ABOUT ME
As a self-taught photographer, I've gained invaluable experience from an array of professions and activities that helped formulate my artistic vision. A decade in the psychology field gave me an insight to emotions and communication. Another decade as a Web designer taught me composition and various ways of communicating a vision.

When the opportunity presents itself, I can be found experiencing the world through such activities as hiking, kayaking, bicycling, snow skiing, learning history and, of course, I’m always seeing the world through the eyes of a camera. Through my travels, I've learned that I have much to learn. With so much to experience and so little time in this world, I try to focus on travel, culture and history — particularly indigenous peoples.

After earning my Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a minor in Communications from Texas Tech University in the early 1990's, I've resided in such places as Denver and Austin prior to returning to my native home of Houston. I'm actively involved with the Houston Photographic Society as a member and I serve as their Webmaster where I've also won numerous awards.

I've also placed in national photographic competitions including four "Photo of the Year" honors. Several of my images have appeared in calendars, magazines, print publications and elsewhere.

I'm happily married to a beautiful and patient woman who is instrumental in fostering my photographic endeavors and nurturing the creativity I seek from every day life.
