People love the Houston Museum of Natural Science—and it shows. As one of the most heavily attended museums in the United States, and one of the most attended venues in Houston, the Museum is in the distinguished company of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History, both in New York City.

The Museum strives to continually offer new, entertaining and innovative educational exhibits and films. The permanent exhibit halls, located on four floors, range from Paleontology Hall, where ancient carnivores hover, to the world-renowned Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals, home to the best display-quality collection of minerals in the world. The John P. McGovern Hall of the Americas, the Texas-size Wiess Energy Hall, which is now a model for all others, and the Welch Chemistry Hall, contain interactive, hands-on displays, exhibits and a live demonstration theater that are always available to visitors to the Museum.

In addition to creating its own exhibits like Gold! Natural Treasure, Cultural Obsession, Kremlin Gold: 1000 Years of Russian Gems and Jewels and The Human Genome: Reading the Book of Life, the Houston Museum of Natural Science is host to a great variety of traveling exhibitions from around the world throughout the year. There is always something new to discover.

Since 2000, the Museum has hosted The Dead Sea Scrolls, Tibet: Treasures from the Roof of the World, the world premiere of Saint Peter and the Vatican: The Legacy of the Popes Voyages of Discovery; Secret World of the Forbidden City: Splendors From China’s Imperial Palace; Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga; Titanic: The Artifact Exhibit; and Machu Picchu: Unveiling the Mysteries of the Incas.

Exhibitions scheduled to arrive in the next year are: The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: The Exhibition, Mummy: The Inside Story and Diana, a Celebration.

All visitors enjoy a world-class facility that includes the Wortham IMAX® Theatre, the Burke Baker Planetarium, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, the George Observatory and the Museum’s fascinating permanent exhibit halls, as well as continually changing traveling exhibitions. Members of the Houston Museum of Natural Science enjoy the benefits of belonging to the Museum, including reduced special exhibition ticket prices, priority reservations, free admission to the general exhibitions and the ability to bypass long lines at the box office.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is one of two museums world-wide that produce and distribute large format films. Since 1994, the Museum has distributed five films, including Africa: The Serengeti (1994), the Academy Awardâ„¢ nominated Alaska: Spirit of the Wild (1997), Amazing Journeys (1999), Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa (2002) and Australia: Land Beyond Time (2002).

A visit to the Houston Museum of Natural Science is always an adventure.
