Live Oak Friends Meeting House
James Turrell, a practicing Quaker, heard of Live Oak Friends Meeting's project to build a new meeting house in 1995. He volunteered his vision of a Quaker meeting house, as well as the design of a "skyspace" for the meeting room. Leslie Elkins, who was quite familiar with James's work, and with an expertise in the design of "spiritual" buildings, enlisted as the architect. Sally Reynolds and Hiram Butler were instrumental in raising funds for the building from the Houston and larger art community. The design of the meeting house, as well as the fundraising, took several years, but the project was an outstanding success. Our Meeting feels very at home in the meeting house, and we welcome the opportunity it offers for outreach. Many non-Quakers have visited the meeting house to bask in its quiet and peace, and many have developed more of an interest in Quakerism. The meeting house is a three-room building with a "pre-function area" (for people to gather before meeting for worship to visit), the meeting room, and a "post-function" area (with bathrooms, a sink, and a table used for meetings). The meeting room itself is square, with plain plaster walls and tall windows, with a high vaulted ceiling, in which is the "skyspace." Seating is provided by white oak benches of James Turrell's design.
