    St. Luke's United Methodist Church

    Comment on Facebook

St. Luke's United Methodist Church was formally organized in 1945. The first Service of Worship was held in the auditorium of Lamar High School on November 11th of that year. Lamar continued for six years as the meeting place of the newly formed church. Many of the church's weekday planning meetings, choir rehearsals, and youth group meetings were held in the homes of its members.

The first building on the church site was the Wynn Blanton Memorial Building, a community building built in memory of Wynn Blanton, the brother of Jack, Joe, and Bill Blanton. The first worship services on our present campus were conducted on Christmas Sunday, 1951, in what is now the Fellowship Hall. The Sanctuary opened in 1959. The Rotunda Theatre and office suite opened in 1981 and 1982 respectively. The new classroom and Activity Building was completed in 1995.

The building and surrounding gardens are inspiring, however, the great legacy of St. Luke's is its people. The building and grounds only reflect the faith and vitality of those who meet here. At the courtyard entrance of the church is a sculpture of Christ flanked by John Wesley, founder of Methodism, and Frances Asbury, namesake of Asbury Seminary. It serves as a constant reminder of the mandate of Jesus Christ to go into all the world in His name and is appropriately titled Teach All Nations. The majesty of the sanctuary filled with people in worship; the friendly warmth of the South Campus with its swimming pool and soccer field; and the Rotunda's Terrace's sculpture, Christ Teaching The Children are all reminders that these surroundings were meant for unique purposes. Special things happen when people gather at St.Luke's.
