Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ
The Pilgrim Congregational Church of Houston began in 1900, as a fellowship of people dedicated to helping children and their parents to live a better life. Bible classes, games, parties and instructions to parents in simple and moral living followed. The program grew so rapidly that the idea of forming a church was a natural development.
Pilgrim has affected practically every aspect of life in the Houston area, in services both large and small. The church was a distribution center for social services, such as, collecting and mending clothes for the needy, and collecting shoes and food for them. The ministers and members have served in leadership capacities in many of the now United Way Agencies.
The church was active in the establishment of the local YMCA and YWCA. The local Longshoremen are working under a charter written by laymen of the church. The first night school for adults was started by a member of the church. The first supervised recreational program for the community was sponsored by the church. The church, through some of its members, loaned valuable leadership to the Postal Service to enable them to have their first Black clerks. The church played a big part in establishing Carnegie Library in the Black community.
