TBH Center (Talento Bilingüe de Houston)

Talento Bilingüe de Houston is adjacent to Guadalupe Plaza Park, a mission style park and Buffalo Bayou, a few miles from downtown Houston and is in a 16,000 square foot facility leased from the City of Houston Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department. Our facility has a 300-seat theater, rehearsal room, art exhibit and gallery space, gift shop, video and film editing suite, photograph and darkroom space, and administrative offices.

The facility was redeveloped with a $992,000 Community Development Block Grant through the City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department in 1996.

Menil Collection

The Menil Collection opened in 1987 to preserve and exhibit the art collection of John and Dominique de Menil. Considered one of the most important privately assembled collections of the twentieth century, The Menil Collection houses approximately 15,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, and rare books. Masterpieces from antiquity, the Byzantine and medieval worlds, the tribal cultures of Africa, Oceania, and the American Pacific Northwest, and the twentieth century are particularly well represented. Among the highlights of the museum are its Surrealist holdings, widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost collections of its kind. The Menil Collection displays selections from its permanent collection and regularly offers special exhibitions and programs to the public.

Acclaimed by critics as a triumph of modern architecture, The Menil Collection was designed by a joint venture of Renzo Piano/Building Workshop, Genoa, Italy and Richard Fitzgerald & Partners, Houston. The museum’s ingenious roof and skylight system, interior atrium gardens, and large windows fill the galleries with natural light, reflecting subtle changes of weather, season, and time of day. Throughout the museum, visitors find quiet, contemplative spaces, ideal for viewing art.

The Menil Collection’s exterior, a long, understated facade of white steel and gray cypress siding, stands in harmony with the surrounding 1920s-era bungalows. Through its building program the Menil Foundation has created a renowned cultural oasis while preserving the integrity of this tranquil residential neighborhood.

Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens

Bayou Bend: A Unique Collection of Americana

Bayou Bend, the magnificent home of Miss Ima Hogg, is the extraordinary legacy of a remarkable woman. Best known for her superb collection of American decorative arts, Miss Hogg was also largely responsible for Bayou Bend's innovative architecture and breathtaking gardens.

The house, designed by prominent architect John F. Staub, was built between 1927 and 1928 for Miss Hogg and her brothers, William C. and Michael Hogg. Covered in towering trees and thick undergrowth, the site was, in Miss Hogg's words, "nothing but a dense thicket." Undaunted, she created a series of gracious and beautiful gardens that were intended as outdoor rooms for living and entertaining, not just views to be admired from within the house. But Miss Hogg was also appreciative of the wilder side of nature, and she always intended that the surrounding woodlands remain more or less natural, as they are today. In 1957 Miss Hogg donated her home and her collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Bayou Bend opened to the public in 1966 and stands as one of Houston's cultural treasures. The collection at Bayou Bend presently contains several thousand objects installed in some 28 period room settings that showcase American decorative arts from 1620 through 1870.

Eldorado Ballroom

The Eldorado Ballroom is located at 2310 Elgin @ Dowling just two blocks from the Project Row Houses site. Dowling Street, once considered the main street of black Houston, was once lined with black-owned businesses including department stores, shops, professional offices, restaurants, and numerous entertainment venues large and small. Following the desegregation of public facilities in Houston that started in the 1960s, the street's economic fortunes began to decline as African Americans exercised their freedom to spend their money and live wherever they pleased.

The Eldorado Ballroom was the center of one of the most remarkable musical communities in America, where internationally recognized musicians such as B.B. King and Count Basie performed, and home grown successes like Sam "Lightning" Hopkins, Albert Collins, Conrad Johnson, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Johnny Clyde Copeland, and Joe Hughes all lived and performed within a few blocks of each other. From the late 1930s till the early 1970s, this club was the venue of choice for upscale blues and jazz performances, as well as afternoon talent shows and sock-hops. It was the centerpiece of several profitable enterprises owned by African-American businesswoman Anna Dupree (1892-1977) who wanted to establish a "class" venue for black social clubs and general entertainment. Almost from the beginning, the large building became a symbol of community pride - Third Ward's most prestigious focal point.

The Eldorado Ballroom is once again a prestigious focal point. Project Row Houses' work in urban development through the arts led to the gifting of this historic landmark to PRH in 1999. Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex

Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex is a 7200 sq. ft. downtown Houston facility housing 3 fully equipped dance studios and a 120 seat theatrical performance venue. It is managed and operated by Suchu, Inc., the 501(c)(3) nonprofit parent organization of Suchu Dance, Houston's award winning contemporary dance theatre company. In addition to offering contemporary dance/movement classes to the public, the Barnevelder facility is available to be rented by outside groups.

Barnevelder's mission is to foster the proliferation of quality, contemporary performing art and new creative work in Houston by offering arts groups use of an affordable centrally located facility for their classes, rehearsals, performances and special events.
